Open House Dublin 2016

This weekend October 14-16th the Irish Architecture Foundation is hosting their annual Open House event. The weekend includes talks, tours, and exhibitions around the city in some of Dublin's greatest architectural sites. The best part is, all events are free! I'm planning to check out Farmleigh house and some of the smaller design build houses on the lists. Are you going? Any suggestions of great places to check out?

Improving your UX Portfolio

Building your portfolio is a challenging task. How do you know what to include, what to leave out. How do you identify and play to your strengths?

As I've been working on my portfolio, I have learned a lot about how to curate and craft my portfolio, and I'm continuing to work on it all the time. The biggest help for me has been getting friends and colleagues to review it for constructive criticism.

IBM Design Thinking Workshop

Putting Design Thinking Into Practice

I had the opportunity to attend a Design Thinking Workshop for at the Design Studio here at IBM over the last two days. Veteran designers Gabrielle Braga and Rohini Gosain did an awesome walking us through the facets of IBM Design Thinking and introducing us to Design Thinking Workshops.

Below is a brief overview of our process and some action shots of us hard at work!


Our Mission

To empathise with a specific Kenexa user, outline their current scenario, and generate ideas for an improved experience.

 

Our User

Matt, the Recruiter

Matt the Recruiter

Gabi and Rohini gave us a persona, Matt, the Recruiter. They gave us a brief summary of his demographics and tasks. We then used design thinking to dig deeper into Matt's day-to-day.

 

Empathy Mapping

With our empathy map, we endeavored to put ourselves in the shoes our Matt. What does he say, do, think, and feel throughout his day? We used the Empathy Map to identify Matt's pain points (circled) to keep in mind as we moved froward with scenario mapping.

After each step of the process, each team "played back" their findings. The whole group gathered around to look at their work while a member of the team explained how we worked through the task at hand, any difficulties or questions that came up, and our conclusions from completing the exercise. Other members of the groups then offered any relevant questions or comments. We discussed common themes from the two groups' findings.

 

Scenario Mapping

We looked at Matt's current experience in a typical day, step by step. Again we identified pain points and clustered them by theme.

Big Ideas

We then created a board called "Big Ideas" to note any thoughts for improving Matt's To-Be experience and used it to distill down these ideas into important points for our Storyboard.

Storyboarding

Gabi and Rohini encourages to limit ourselves to six steps. We cheated a bit to show the tracker that we wanted to make available to Matt throughout his day!

We walked through the desired experience we wished to create for Matt in a Storyboard. My teammates Tim, Ruben, and I worked together to come up with a clear and concise narrative based on our storyboard points.

Matt signs in and sees dashboard. Includes performance indicators, summarises yesterday, gives him a prioritised list of tasks, he can click to move seamlessly into app to perform task. At the bottom of his screen he has a task tracker where tasks and timelines are continuously updated. The tracker provides notifications when it’s time to move on. In one click he can access new task. At the end of his day he review what he’s accomplished and look at upcoming tasks for the next day.

I learned so much at this workshop. I can't wait to bring back tehse new design thinking tools and process to my team and put them into practice in our workflow!
